Crescent Hill Old-fashioned Fourth & Crescent Hill Art & Music Festival
Saturday, July 3 & Sunday, July 4
 
The public is invited to the 27th Annual Crescent Hill Old-fashioned Fourth of July Celebration & Crescent Hill Art & Music Festival on the July 4th holiday weekend. The free, two-day event, situated on the grounds of the historic Peterson-Dumesnil House at 301 South Peterson Avenue, provides all-day entertainment for the entire family, including a 5-K fun run, an antique car parade, a pet show, a children’s activity area and a cake booth.  
 
The juried art show features 90 regional artists exhibiting on the lawn under the trees. Regional musicians – ranging from traditional bluegrass to contemporary acoustic guitar – will perform on two stages throughout the day and into the evening. 
 
Festivities culminate on Sunday evening with a traditional hand-fired Zambelli Internationale fireworks display.

Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Art fair booths will be open until 6 p.m., though some may remain open until dusk. Free parking with complimentary shuttle service will be available off Grinstead Drive at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland at Walden Theatre 

 

 

Through August 8
The Walden Theatre Summer Academy, a theatre summer program for children ages 8-13, performs “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” on two weekends in July and one weekend in August. The Summer Academy (which began in June) includes five sessions, each culminating in performances by the young actors in three public shows. The play, with an original script by Diana Grisanti, is a commissioned work based on the classic Alice books by Lewis Carroll. It is written for 26 young actors and is suitable for all audiences. 
 
All performances take place at Walden Theatre, 1123 Payne Street. Weekend performances are on Friday and Saturday, July 23 and 24; July 30 and 31; and August 6 and 7; with evening performances at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday afternoon matinees at 2 p.m.

The public is also invited to attend the Walden Family Picnic on Friday, July 16, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. The annual family gathering features games, activities, inflatables, food and more.
 
 

Another Mule at Willow Park 
Sunday July 4 
The Cherokee Triangle Association Summer Concert Series features R&B group Another Mule at Willow Park on Sunday, July 4, at 7 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public, though attendees are encouraged to bring donations of canned goods for Highlands Community Ministries’ Dare to Care Food Pantry.

HCM Senior Center Rededication Ceremony
Thursday, July 15
As of July 1, the Highlands Community Ministries Senior Center’s new name will be Highlands Community Ministries Shaffer Enrichment Center. The name change is in honor of Roz Shaffer, who was the heart and soul of HOPOP (Highlands Outreach Program for Older Persons) for 25 years, and was instrumental in opening the Senior Center at the Douglass Boulevard Christian Church in 2000. Shaffer retired in 2006. Today, the center continues to be a thriving success.                                 
 
Join Highlands Community Ministries Senior Services on Thursday, July 15, 10:30 a.m., at Douglass Boulevard Christian Church, to celebrate the rededication. The church is located at 2005 Douglass Boulevard.

Alley Theater Summer Arts Workshop
July 26 – August 5 
Alley Theater, in conjunction with Art Sanctuary, is offering an inaugural Summer Arts Workshop, from July 26 through August 6, for kids ages six to 17. The workshop will be located downtown at the historic Butchertown Pointe, 1205 E. Washington Street. 
 
The workshop, held Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, will feature a performance demonstration and gallery presentation for families on Friday, August 6, at 4  p.m. 
 
Participants will experience programs in theater, visual arts, voice, movement, and on-camera acting technique. All programs are taught by working professionals in the arts. 
 
Theater participants will study improvisation, basics of stage acting, voice and scene study.  Studio time with artists-in-residence from Art Sanctuary will explore painting, drawing, commercial art and other art forms. Stage movement – including jazz and modern dance, stage combat for older students, and aerial silk acrobatics – will be offered, along with techniques for on-camera acting.
 
The workshop administrator, Alley Theater Producing Director Scott Davis, has over 20 years teaching experience with youth and adult students. He has been a regular at the Young Actors Institute since 1989 and presently teaches Film and Video Production at Jefferson Community and Technical College.
 
The Summer Arts Workshop tuition is $300 per child. A limited number of scholarships are available by application. Registration forms may be downloaded from www.alleytya.org. F.A.T. Friday Trolley Hop 
Friday, July 30
Historic Frankfort Avenue will host the F.A.T. Friday Trolley Hop on Friday, July 30, from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The trolley hop, on the final Friday of each month, provides free parking and transportation to participating shops, restaurants and galleries along the Frankfort, Mellwood and Story Avenue corridor. Transportation is provided by TARC.

WACKY WEDNESDAYS
“Wacky Wednesdays” are back! Join St. Paul United Methodist Church for movies, games, lunch and free playtime on Wednesdays, July 7, July 21, July 28 and August 4, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Children who have completed kindergarten and older may attend without an adult. Kindergarteners and younger children must have adult accompaniment. 
 
Wacky Wednesdays are free and open to the community. Participants should bring a sack lunch and drink labeled with their name. SUMMER MUSIC CAMP
The St. Paul Summer Music Camp will take place July 12–17, from 9 a.m. to noon each day, with performances at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 18. Those entering grades one through six are invited to attend. Participants will learn and perform the musical “Elijah! God’s Faithful Prophet.”
 
The camp offers music and drama, music games, crafts, playtime and refreshments. The registration fee is $35 and may be paid the first day of the camp or in advance with the registration form. Forms are available at the church Information Center.
