At first glance, a lot of people get the name of Rocco Manziano’s practice wrong;  It’s Center of Healing, not Center for Healing. “Thanks for noticing,” says the co-owner of the acupuncture and natural healing center in the 1900 block of Bardstown Road. “It’s called that because it’s about finding a person’s own center of healing within themselves. We’re bringing out their own self-healing abilities. All we’re doing is helping to nudge someone closer to that point.”

The point, of course, is more than acupuncture needles. Manziano and professional (and personal) partner Aurora Raiten see all kinds of people who never come into contact with the sharp stuff. “We have a variety of non-needle techniques,” he says. Such methods include acupressure, nutrition, herbal medicine and light therapy. “It’s really about finding out what’s going to work and providing someone with the right tools.” Manziano and Raiten help address complaints, from allergies to immune system issues to conception/pregnancy difficulties to childhood illnesses. They even provide remedies for cancer patients to help minimize the side effects of treatment. “A good number of people come because of pain anywhere in the body,” Manziano says, citing patients with multiple sclerosis and chronic pain from injuries. “We’re helping to get them out of pain.”

Manziano and Raiten met as independent practitioners in the New York/New Jersey area, but fell in love with Louisville on a visit and made the Highlands their home. “There’s a chiropractic office on nearly every street corner, but not acupuncture, and not necessarily the way we do it,” he says. “Besides, there are enough people on the East Coast doing it, so we thought we’d take it here.”

Not everyone who comes to the Center of Healing is ill. The pair sees athletes wishing to enhance their own wellness, endurance, and sense of strength and speed. “It’s helping the body work better,” Manziano says. Many who come to the center report positive results that they hadn’t anticipated. “One of the side effects of acupuncture, people usually tell me, is that they start sleeping better, digesting better, even if that wasn’t their chief complaint,” Manziano says. “It’s stress relief ... Everyone’s stressed out some way or another.”

Manziano and Raiten aren’t stressed out about their competition, as they bring not only a variety of services but knowledge and expertise across the board – and across time. “What we have is advanced degrees in medical sciences, and we combine the old traditional medicine and modern advances in nutrition and light therapy in a way that enhances the total effect of treatment rather than just relying on one thing,” says Manziano. “It’s getting the best of the ancient and modern worlds ... We help people increase their self-healing power and it’s pretty amazing to watch.”
